“Ahhh.” Cash refilled one of Andi’s precious crystal glasses with milk from the stoneware pitcher and took a long swallow.

He was slouched in his mother’s rocker, feet braced against the andirons on the hearth. There was a slight chill in the room and that morning he’d built a fire and was now toasting his boot soles by its embers.

“Do you realize,” he commented, setting the glass on the hearth. “We are completely alone in this house? Have been for a week…and no one, not George, not Eli, not my grandparents, has come to check on us?” He spread his arms, proclaiming dramatically, “We are unchaperoned and unsupervised.”

There was no answer.

“Adam?” He raised his voice, twisting to look behind him. “Are you asleep?”

“No,” Adam answered from across the room.

“Did you hear me? I said…”

“I heard you.” The older boy lay on the sofa, hands behind his head, staring at the ceiling. Tommy was curled into a bright orange and white fur ball on his chest. “So we’re alone. Why don’t we get a couple of girls and have a wild party?”

“Is sex all you think about?” Cash picked up his glass again.

“No, but it’s running a pretty close second.” Adam raised himself and snagged his own glass off the end table. “Hey. Don’t drink all that. Save me a little.”

Reluctantly, Cash got up, picked up the pitcher and refilled Adam’s glass. He returned to the rocker.

“Surely there’s something else that interests you,” he persisted.

“Our dreams are what keep us going.” Adam closed his eyes again. “My dream is to lose my virginity at the first available opportunity.” He heaved a heavy dramatic sigh. “Which doesn’t look as if it’s going to present itself any time soon.’

They were both silent again.

“Why haven’t we?” Cash spoke up.

“Why haven’t we what?” Adam began to rub Tommy’s ears. The cat opened one eye and butted the boy’s hand.

“Run wild. Done something shocking and scandalous while we’re by ourselves?”

“Dunno.” There was a slight shrug, difficult to do when one is lying down. “Maybe we’re more responsible than we think we are?”

“God, I hope not.” Cash gave a theatrical shudder.

Adam sat up, spilling Tommy to the floor. The cat landed on his feet, fixed the boy with a baleful golden eye and proceeded to stretch, kneading his claws into Andi’s hand-woven rug.

Yawning, fangs gleaming, Adam copied the gesture, arms over his head. Watching him, Cash thought how like the cat the boy was…graceful, lithe. Even half-asleep, he moved like a feline.

If any girl sees Adam first, I won’t have a chance.

“Guess I’ll see if the mail’s here.” Adam stood, looked at the cat, and dropped to one knee, making an odd little growl. “Want to come along, Tommy?”

The cat sprang onto his shoulder and settled himself, claws digging into the rough weave of his sweater.

“How do you get him to do that?” Cash asked.

“Simple. I just asked him in cat language if he’d rather ride or walk.”

“You’re weird, Adam. You know that?”

“Yeah, it’s one of my more endearing qualities.
